The Parish Millenium Project

On the run-up to the New Millennium Bishop James McGuiness asked all parishes to choose a project, which they could support as a demonstration of our commitment to do God’s work on Earth. Although the Bishop left it up to the parishes to decide on the project, the criteria was that it was to be a project that the parish would continue to support well into the new millennium and not an immediate “disaster relief” scheme.

After considering various proposals received from parish members, included local, national and international schemes, Fr. John O’Donnell, the then Parish Priest, decided to support the work of the Franciscan Missionaries of Saint Joseph in Colimes, Ecuador, South America.

Since 2000 our Parish has supported the Project, initially through sending a proportion (10%) of all proceeds from fund raising activities, this raised approximately £500 annually. Due to changes in the Charities Act it has become necessary to change the method of raising donations and so for the last two years Fr. Jim has held a special collection over the Easter Season, last year over £600 was raised.

The money is sent via the Franciscan Missionaries of St. Joseph’s Mother House in Manchester, directly to the Nuns who run the Mission in Colimes, who are Sr. Mary Coyne, Sr. Maura Murphy and St. Katherine Vaughan.
